What to look for in Sewing, Quilting, Embroidery, Overlocker, Coverstitch Machines when purchasing a machine.
1.Look for a machine with quality parts especially strong metal frame.
2.Motor/Speed is a component that many over look. There are 2 types of machine motors
AC:- Alternating Current. AC Motors start off slowly having less power when running at low speeds. Machine finds it difficult to stitch through thick layers often needing assistance by turning the Hand wheel.
DC :- Direct Current. DC motor reaches top speed faster, maintains speed and stops faster. DC motor has stronger power at lower speeds making it easier to stitch heavier projects.
Not sure which type of motor your machine has? Starts slow gradually speeding up it is AC motor. Machines reaches tops speed as soon as you touch the foot control it is a DC motor.
Janome entry point machines have AC motors, the more advanced Machines have DC motors
3.Sit down and sew on the machines.
Listen to how it sews. Does it run smoothly, does the stitch tension look good, does it have the stitches you require for the type of stitching that you do, does the machine allow you to alter stitch width and length, does it allow you to save your stitch alterations, can you move the needle position in all the stitches, does it have automatic buttonhole?
This is only an example. You need to test for the requirements you would like your new machine to have.
4.Machine Embroidery hoop size is very important. This determines the size of your finished product
5.Overlocker/Coverstitch are they easy threading?
6.Take sample fabrics to test out the machine
5. Purchase a machine that you can grow into. Consider what you will be sewing now and the areas you want to possibly sew in the future.
Here at Peppermint Stitches I can assist in all the above areas.
